Pine Dowels
The type of wood you choose determines the beauty and strength of the finished piece you are working on. Many varieties of wood are available, and each has its own properties. Today, we will be focusing on pine wood and the different types that are available.
Pines are evergreen trees. The smallest are Siberian Dwarf Pine and Potosi Pinyon, and the tallest is a 268.35-foot (81.79-meter) tall Ponderosa Pine. Pine is a softwood and easy to carve and shape. It also stains well.
Spotlight on Pine Lumber
White Pine Wood: Largely used for interior joinery for doors, windows, interior trim, fitments, shelving, and light and medium building construction. Specialized uses include furniture and cabinets, boat and shipbuilding, pattern making, and drawing boards. It is rotary cut for plywood and often used for decorative paneling veneers.
Pitch Pine Wood: This timber is used for heavy construction work, truck and railway wagons, shipbuilding, exterior joinery, bridge building, and decks. This wood also produces the largest percentage of the world’s rosin and turpentine.
Ponderosa Pine Wood: This sapwood is used in America for pattern making, kitchen furniture, building construction, window frames, doors, and general carpentry as well as wood boxes and crates. This is also a wood used for paneling. This wood, because it is soft, is also used for sculpture and carving and cabinet and furniture making. Specialized uses include parts for stringed instruments such as guitars, organ parts, ship and boat building, and light construction. This wood is also used for packing crates and boxes.
Yellow Pine Wood: This species is stable and used for pattern making for fine detail, drawing boards, doors, and other detail work. It’s also used for sculpture and carving, cabinet and furniture making, shelving, and interior trim. This pine wood is also used for string instruments such as guitars.
