Poplar Dowels

Poplar dowels are low-density hardwoods that have low bending, shock resistance, stiffness, and compression values, with a medium steam-bending classification. They have excellent strength and stability.

The sapwood is creamy white and may be streaked, with the heartwood varying from pale yellowish brown to olive green. The green color in the heartwood will tend to darken on exposure to light and turn brown. The wood has a medium to fine texture and is straight-grained with a comparatively uniform texture.

The Poplar Tree

They have increased in demand as the Poplar trees are fast-growing; kiln drying times are less than many other hardwood species and poplar is competitively priced in comparison to other hardwood dowel species.  In addition, poplar accepts a finish very well. Overall, it is one of the most common utility hardwoods in the United States, according to The Wood Database.

Poplar dowels are used in furniture, interior balusters and newels, turnings, broom, mop/rake handles, banner dowels, and flag dowels as well as many other dowel applications.
